The Flight Instructor Certificate is where your flying career earns a second dimension. As a CAAP-certified flight instructor, you gain the privilege to train the next generation of Philippine pilots — logging instruction time, building your own hours, and deepening your mastery of every manoeuvre you teach. Our CFI programme covers the Fundamentals of Instructing, advanced airmanship to instructor standards, and the lesson planning and communication skills that separate a good pilot from a great teacher.

Program Structure

A. Ground School (50 Hours)

Fundamentals of Instructing (FOI)

  • Learning theory, how students acquire and retain skills
  • The teaching process — preparation, presentation, and evaluation
  • Instructor responsibilities and professionalism in aviation training

Air Law — Instructor Regulations

  • PCAR Part 61, Subpart H — CFI privileges, limitations, and renewal requirements
  • Student pilot endorsements, solo authorisation, and logbook entries

Lesson Planning & Instruction Techniques

  • Writing structured lesson plans for PPL and CPL manoeuvres
  • Demonstration-performance method and error analysis in flight instruction
  • Oral quizzing, pre-flight briefing, and post-flight debriefing techniques

Flight Safety & Instructor Responsibilities

  • Identifying and correcting student errors before they become habits
  • Managing dual instruction risk, student solo authorisation, and endorsement responsibilities

Radio Communication

  • Teaching standard ICAO phraseology to ab initio students
  • Instructor techniques for managing ATC communication during dual instruction

B. Instructor Flight Training

Pre-Flight Preparation

Instructor-standard pre-flight inspection, student briefing, and lesson objective setting

Basic Manoeuvre Instruction

Demonstrating and teaching straight and level, climbs, descents, turns, and circuits to PPL standard — from the right seat

Advanced Manoeuvre Instruction

Teaching stall recognition and recovery, steep turns, forced landings, and go-arounds to checkride standard

Cross-Country Instruction

Planning and conducting a dual cross-country as the instructing pilot — navigation, airspace management, and in-flight decision coaching

Lesson Plan Presentation

Structured oral presentation of a prepared lesson plan — required for CFI checkride and evaluated by a CAAP-authorised examiner

Checkride Preparation Flights

Practice teaching flights covering the full PPL and CPL manoeuvre sequence to instructor proficiency standard

Assessments

  • Written Exam 1: CAAP Fundamentals of Instructing (FOI) Knowledge Test — learning theory, teaching methods, and instructor responsibilities
  • Written Exam 2: CAAP CFI Airmen Knowledge Test — advanced air law, flight instruction regulations, and PCAR Part 61 requirements
  • Practical Test (Checkride): Conducted with a CAAP-authorised examiner — includes lesson plan oral presentation and flight manoeuvre demonstration from the right seat

Entry Requirements

  • Minimum age: 18 years old
  • Hold a valid CAAP Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) with Instrument Rating
  • Able to read, speak, and understand English proficiently
  • Hold a valid CAAP Class 1 or Class 2 Medical Certificate issued by a CAAP-accredited Aviation Medical Examiner (AME)
